In April 2001, my husband and I retired from Dublin to Navan. We settled in quickly and were very happy in our new home. In Sept 2002 an advertisement in our local church newsletter was to change our lives completely. It was in connection with the Special Olympic World Games 2003 which were to be held in Ireland. They were looking for volunteers and host families in Navan. Navan was to host the Belgian Team. We offered our home as a host family and became volunteers.
This was the decision that changed our lives. It was a wonderful experience and we made many new friends. After the games were over we became volunteers with the Special Olympic Club in Navan. It was there that we got to know "Mary" and her friends within Clann Mór. We decided it would be nice to become volunteers with them also.
Our involvement within Clann Mór revolves mostly around "Mary". We accompany her on walks to help her training. She also regularly comes to our home for dinner. Support was offered to "Mary" when she moved into her new home.
We helped her settle in and especially to get her bedroom set up. We often go out on nice outings and regularly bring "Mary" to visit her mother who lives in a nursing home some distance away.
As "Mary" likes to visit her family home place and meet with old friends and neighbours there, we sometimes take a day out to fit this all in. She has become like one of our family.
Our involvement with "Mary" and her friends in Clann Mór, along with the wonderful staff that work there, has been for us a most enriching and rewarding experience for us.
