Founded in the late 1970's and first known as the "Parents and Friends of the Mentally Handicapped", a support group was established which provided a meeting place/focus point for parents and friends. At this time most of the group's time was spent on fund raising to support Day and School Services which were already established in the town of Navan, Co Meath.
In time the group turned its attention to the prospect of the provision of Respite Care. With this in mind they secured a loan to buy a suitable property and continued to fund raise to repay the loan.
Before acquiring the loan and having accepted legal opinion, the formation of a limited company was recommended. In 1982, the Meath Association for the Mentally Handicapped Ltd. (St. Olivers, Commons Road, Navan.) was incorporated.
The company purchased their first property in Navan, Co. Meath. The service opened in 1982. The set up of the property and preparation for occupation was all done on a voluntary basis, with local companies donating a lot of the contents.
Growth of the Service
Since its foundation the service has grown significantly. Today, the company has a number of community based houses/apartments, which are people's permanent homes. It provides a Dedicated Respite Service also, to offer people who avail of the service with a home away from home, for that often necessary or planned break. It provides individualized Outreach Support to suit people's personal circumstances and choices outside of a group setting. It also provides a drop off point and pick up/rendez vous point for many social occasions and events.
The company is supported financially and professionally by the Health Service Executive (HSE). Funding opportunities also include People in Need, National Lottery and private donors and contributors . The company also hosts its own fundraising events.
On 6th December 2006 the company changed its name to Clann Mór Residential and Respite Ltd.
